Disney Cruise Line Ships: Size, Age and Classes

disney cruise ship sizes

At 144,000 gross registered tons with a passenger capacity of about 4,000, Disney Wish is not a small ship by any means; however, she certainly is not the largest at sea, either. However, when Global Dream debuts in 2025 in Singapore, it will weigh in at an estimated 208,000 GRT. When it comes to Disney cruise ships by size, this is nearly double the size of any current Disney ship. All ships offer the Oceaneer Club, a state-of the-art kids club, but they vary slightly by ship.

Best Disney Cruise Ships Ranked

Each of the original four ships has a French-themed restaurant, although the names and themes are different. There are also three incredibly fun-themed restaurants – Tiana’s Place on the Disney Wonder, Arendelle on the Disney Wish, and Rapunzel’s Royal Table on the Disney Magic. In addition to dinner, you’ll also be entertained while eating at these three restaurants.

What makes Disney cruise ships so unique?

The ship’s bow will feature the Disney Character, Captain Minnie (in hero costume). As the mom of a seventeen-year-old son and eighteen-year-old daughter, she has spent much time traveling with kids, and has taken many cruises over the years. Jodi lives in Massachusetts with her family and is the founder of Family Travel Magazine. While I do think the overall experience on the Magic and Wonder can be better, I still do enjoy sailing on the Wish.

Royal Caribbean Cruises, History, Destinations and Itineraries

While all of the dining rooms on the Disney Cruise Line are fun and offer lots of delicious food options, they do vary by ship. Animator’s Palate, as well as the premium, adult-only Palo, are offered on all original four ships. Once you look at the itineraries, you’ll definitely have a good idea of which Disney Cruise Line ship you’ll want to be on, especially if you plan to travel on an itinerary that only one ship offers. It’s difficult to answer that without looking at the various itineraries as well as comparing the sizes, restaurants, amenities, and more on the Disney Cruise ships. If you are a regular reader here, you know that I’m an avid cruiser on the Disney Cruise Line.

Names of Disney Cruise Ships

Below you'll find all Disney ships ranked by size (in Gross Tonnage). Additionally, you'll find a number of other stats in our ship list. These include ship length, beam, draft, passenger count, and a few others for your viewing pleasure. As a smaller ship, it’s definitely more quaint and it’s easier to walk around. My personal favorite is the Disney Fantasy, the second-newest ship in the fleet (for now). However, that was the first Disney ship that I traveled on, so I’m not sure if that’s why it’s my favorite.

In terms of pricing, Disney is one of the more expensive mainstream cruise lines. A 3-night Bahamas cruise onboard Disney Wish will cost you at least $1,905 for two people staying in an inside cabin. If you opt to sail on one of their holiday itineraries (i.e., Halloween on the High Seas and Very Merrytime sailings), you can expect to pay even more. A 4-night Very Merrytime cruise starts at $2,787 for two people in an interior stateroom.

Disney Dream is operating short sailings out of Miami to the Bahamas and Caribbean, while Disney Fantasy is devoted to longer Caribbean sailings. That makes Disney Cruise Line an even smaller brand, relative to the big lines, on a passenger capacity basis. Additionally, a sixth ship, Disney Treasure, has been announced and is expected to be seaworthy some time in 2024. Disney Magic, DCL’s inaugural ship, debuted in 1998, while Disney Wonder debuted a year later, in 1999. The Disney Magic and Disney Wonder are the smallest ships in the Disney fleet, being 40% smaller than the Disney Wish.

Comparing the Disney Cruise Ships

Disney Wonder also has numerous different sailings to choose from, and for the first time, Disney Cruise Line is headed Down Under to Australia and the South Pacific starting in October 2023! You will not find this ship sailing to the Bahamas or Caribbean. Instead, cruises onboard Disney Wonder will take you all over the world, from Alaska to the Mexican Rivera, Hawaii, and Australia/New Zealand. Despite a low-sounding number for double occupancy, the family-friendly cabin configurations of the Dream Class allow for up to 4,000 passengers.

Disney Cruise Ships By Size

They have a notably more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships. Designed with families in mind (as is the Disney way), Disney Wish's cabins are built with lots of extra berths for kids. The Triton class is the shiny new thing at Disney Cruise Line, with the first vessel in the series (Disney Wish) having just arrived in July. At 140,000 tons, Disney Wish is only a tad bigger than Disney's last two new ships, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.

Pixar Day at Sea is a fantastic experience offered only on Disney Fantasy to have a one-of-a-kind experience with all your favorite Pixar monsters, toys, and characters. The third ship of the Disney fleet, the Disney Dream, first set out from Port Canaveral on January 26, 2011, to the Bahamas. Disney Dream is tied with the Fantasy for the 2nd largest ship in the Disney fleet. Disney Magic is also the only Disney cruise with itineraries visiting Europe, with transatlantic voyages heading to Greece, Spain, the British Isles, and Norway. The Disney Magic is also the only ship that includes the Avengers Academy, allowing fans to fly with the one and only Iron Man.

Disney Magic and Disney Wonder are both Magic-class ships built in 1998 and 1999 but completely refit in 2018 and 2019, respectively. The most expensive Disney cruise ship to build was the Disney Wish. She is also the most expensive for a cruise vacation as she is the newest ship and has the most experience on board. The best Disney cruise ship that you can book is Disney Wish, but she is also the most expensive and so you need to balance that. She’s the newest ship, and she has some really exciting features to enjoy.

Originally ordered for now-defunct Dream Cruises, the ship remains unfinished at the shipyard in Germany, but will bear the Disney brand and potentially a new name when it launches. This ship is the cruise line’s first for the Asian market, setting sail in Singapore. Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy are Dream-class ships built in 2011 and 2012.

Because of its smaller size, Disney Magic offers fewer and smaller attractions than newer Disney ships such as Disney Wish. This is something you rarely see in the cruise world, and it's designed to make it easier for families sharing a room to get ready in the morning. All the extra bunks can make for some confusion when comparing the passenger capacity of the ships to vessels at other lines.

You can use this handy information sheet to compare Disney ships by size, capacity, tonnage, staff, and age. With more passenger rooms than earlier Disney ships, the ship has an open and pleasant architecture. Disney Wish has the same 4,000-passenger capacity as the previous Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, although being 12% larger. While on the other Disney ships, the adults-only area is grouped into a specific district, the Wish has 18+ venues. With two adult-only restaurants, Remy and Palo, you can sit back and relax while enjoying a child-free meal. This is the first in the Disney fleet to showcase Minnie as the bow medallion character, and guests can meet her in her captain’s uniform.

The Oceaneers Club also offers a Marvel Super Hero Academy where kids can design (and virtually fly) in their own super suit. In September 2022, Disney announced their new ship, the Disney Treasure. The ship is estimated to start services in 2024 as part of the Wish class. It has a gross registered tonnage of 144,000, and at 1,114 feet, it can hold 4,000 passengers. Setting out for the first time on March 31, 2012, the Disney Fantasy’s maiden voyage was from Port Canaveral to the Bahamas, with a capacity for 4,000 passengers. At 1,114 feet long, the Disney Fantasy has a gross registered tonnage of 129,750.
